A Word Study to Give Hope

2 Corinthians 1:19-22 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea. For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us. Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

Verse 19 tells us that God never says "No" when talking to us about our salvation. Once we believe in Jesus Christ, and confess him before men, God never again says NO to us.

Verse 20 tells us that "YES" and Amen, which is a word of total agreement, is what God says to you about your confession of faith in Christ.

Verse 21 Tells us that it is God who decided, before the foundation of the world, that he would accept and keep you once you confessed faith in Christ.

Verse 22 Here is the word we want to see to find good hope. First God sealed us. A seal in Bible times was red wax melted onto a document and the stamp of some official pressed into the hot was before it hardened. No one but the recipient had the legal authority to open the document sealed this way. No one can break the seal of God on you. It is official.

But, on top of the seal, God also gave you the earnest of the Holy Spirit in your heart. The English word EARNEST is still found in use today. It is the money we pay up front which secures a sale of goods or property. The Earnest makes that property absolutely yours until you make the final payment. God the Holy Spirit is the Earnest, and he will never leave you.

You are signed, sealed, and soon to be delivered into Heaven.

I learned that Historians found a document in Greece that was from the era of the Bible times. The document was a Title Deed to a property being sold. At the top of the page was the word, αρραβώνων, which was the old Greek word for Title Deed, and it is the very word in our text translated as Earnest in Verse 22.

Now, here is the fact which will rock you I suspect. The exact same Greek word found in 2 Corinthians 1:22 is still in use today in modern Greek. Language meanings change over hundreds or thousands of years. So, what does "Earnest" mean today on the streets of Athens?

It is the word for "An engagement ring." The Bride has the ring on her finger, and YOU ARE THE BRIDE, the Church. The marriage contract between you and God is sealed and finished, and the Holy Spirit is your engagement ring. And, as we learned earlier. God never says NO. He always says YES.

I do not know how you started this day. I do not know what doubts and fears you may be having right now. But, this I know about you. If you know you confessed faith in Jesus Christ at some time in the past, from that day until now, and until eternity, you have the word of God, who never changes his mind...... you are on your way to a wedding, and the groom died on the Cross and rose from death to make sure you get to the wedding. And, the Holy Spirit is shining you your soul trying his best to make sure you know who you are.

You may occasionally doubt this truth, but God NEVER DOES.

YES!!

Need some proof? Go to Google Images, and copy and paste this Greek word αρραβώνων, the exact word found in Verse 22, into Google, and see what happens. POW..... there you are. You and the Holy Ghost!!!!!

Revelation 19:6-9 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.
